# Understanding your visibility score

What the Visibility score measures, how it is counted, what its tiers mean, and how to read it next to rank and share of voice.

The **Visibility score** is the main number in Rank Prompt:

> Out of every AI answer we collected, the share that named your brand.

It is always a percentage of answers: "HubSpot is named in 18% of AI answers".

## How it's counted

Each answer is one prompt asked on one AI platform in one report. The score divides the answers that name your brand by every answer collected:

```
Visibility score = answers that name your brand ÷ every answer collected
```

**Example:**

- You track **20 prompts** on **3 AI platforms**: that's **60 answers** per run

- **18** of those answers name your brand

-   Your Visibility score is 18 ÷ 60 = **30%**

On the Visibility pages, the card under the score shows the same count, for example "18 of 60 answers". Adding AI platforms adds answers: up to 3 AI platforms cost 1 credit per prompt, 4 to 6 cost 2, all 7 cost 3 (see [How credits work](https://help.rankprompt.com/en/articles/16-understanding-credits.md)).

### What counts as naming your brand

An answer names your brand when it names your brand or one of its **aliases**: other names or spellings AI answers use for you (a product name, an abbreviation such as "KW" for Keller Williams). Add aliases in **Brand settings > Aliases and categories**. If an AI platform names you under a name Rank Prompt listed as a competitor, mark it **My brand (this is us)** on the competitor and your past reports are recounted (see [Competitors analysis](https://help.rankprompt.com/en/articles/35-competitors-analysis.md)).

### Across AI platforms

Every answer counts the same, whichever AI platform gave it:

```
Prompt: "Best CRM for a small sales team"
ChatGPT:    names your brand, 2nd   ✓
Perplexity: names your brand, 1st   ✓
AI Mode:    doesn't name it         ✗
Claude:     names your brand, 3rd   ✓
3 of 4 answers = 75% for this prompt
```

Pick one AI platform in the **AI platforms** filter to see its score alone, or several to see them together.

### Across categories

Every answer counts the same, so a category with more prompts weighs more in your overall score:

```
Products:  10 answers, 8 name you  = 80%
Services:   5 answers, 2 name you  = 40%
Industry:   5 answers, 3 name you  = 60%
Overall: (8 + 2 + 3) ÷ (10 + 5 + 5) = 13 ÷ 20 = 65%
```

### What doesn't count

- **Unfinished reports**: a report that didn't finish keeps the answers it saved as partial results, and they don't count in the score or its charts

- **Other time frames and reports**: the score only reads the reports, dates, categories and AI platforms in your filters

### Reports with several markets

On a report's **Summary** tab, **Visibility** with **All markets** counts every answer of the latest run in all its markets together, so a market with more prompts or AI platforms weighs more. The Visibility pages read a report you pick in the **Reports in view** filter the same way, so the two match.

## Where you see it

## The tiers

The app labels every score with one of three tiers, and the same bands color the score everywhere:

<table style="min-width: 75px;"><colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup><tbody><tr><th colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Tier</p></th><th colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Score</p></th><th colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>What the app says</p></th></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Strong</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>50% or more</p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>When people ask about the category, AI platforms name and cite your brand regularly</p></td></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Moderate</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>25% to under 50%</p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Your brand shows up for some prompts, with real room to grow</p></td></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Emerging</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Under 25%</p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>There is a wide opening to get AI platforms to name your brand</p></td></tr></tbody></table>

The colors add one more step: red under 5%, yellow from 5% to under 25%, blue from 25% to under 50%, green from 50%.

Scores tend to run low: many brands start in single digits. So judge yours against your competitors and against your own trend, more than against a fixed number:

- **Against competitors**: your share of voice on **Visibility > Competitors** shows whether rivals are named more often than you

- **Against yourself**: a Scheduled Report shows whether you're climbing, run after run

- **By prompt type**: prompts that mention your brand by name (type **Brand**) should almost always get answers that name you; broad category prompts are harder

## Visibility by AI platform

**Visibility by platform** on the Overview breaks your score down by AI platform. The same prompt can name you on one and miss you on another, because each AI platform builds its answers its own way: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Muse and Perplexity often search the web before answering, each picks and ranks its sources differently, and each draws on its own training.

When you're strong on one AI platform and weak on another:

1. Filter **Visibility > Prompts** to the weak AI platform and open the answers that miss you: which brands do they name?

2. Check **Sources > Citations** with the same AI platform filter: which sites does it cite?

3. Check **Visibility > Fan-outs**: what did it search before answering? Google AI Mode (AI Overviews) doesn't report its searches.

4. Get your brand onto the pages and searches that AI platform relies on

## Why the score moves

### Up

- You published or updated content that answers your prompts

- Sites the AI platforms cite started to mention you

- A competitor dropped out of the answers

### Down

- Competitors published better content or earned more mentions

- The AI platforms changed how they answer

- Your pages went out of date

- You added harder, broader prompts

### Flat

- Nothing changed much in your space

- Good news if your score is high, a signal to act if it's low

## Improving your score

### Quick wins

1. **Update your best pages**: keep facts, prices and comparisons current

2. **Answer your prompts directly**: a page that answers a prompt in its own words is easier to cite

3. **Link your topics together**: help AI platforms see what your site covers

4. **Get mentioned where AI looks**: the sites in **Sources > Citations** are your outreach list

### Longer term

1. **Study the prompts that miss you** on **Visibility > Prompts**

2. **Study who is named instead** on **Visibility > Competitors**

3. **Build complete guides** on the topics you want to own

4. **Keep publishing** and track the effect with a Scheduled Report

The report's **How to fix your results** tab turns this into tasks for one report (**Show me what to fix**, 1 credit).

## Visibility score, rank and share of voice

<table style="min-width: 50px;"><colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup><tbody><tr><th colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Metric</p></th><th colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>What it means</p></th></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Visibility score</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Out of every AI answer collected, the share that named your brand</p></td></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Best rank</strong> / <strong>Answer position</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Where your brand sits in an answer that names it (1 is first)</p></td></tr><tr><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p><strong>Share of voice</strong></p></td><td colspan="1" rowspan="1"><p>Of all the times AI named you or a competitor, the share that was you</p></td></tr></tbody></table>

You could have:

- **A high score and a low place**: named often, but rarely first

- **A low score and a high place**: named rarely, but first when you are

- **The goal**: named often, near the top

## Using the score well

### Don't chase small moves

AI answers vary from run to run. Look at:

- The trend over several runs

-   Month over month changes

- The effect of specific things you did

### Compare like with like

When you compare two periods, keep:

-   The same prompts

-   The same AI platforms

-   The same markets

- In mind any prompts you added
